Our first ever Gingerbread Wars program was hugely successful! We had more than thirty students and their families participate. They decorated cookies based on their favorite books, and the judges were very impressed with their book summaries and their creativity. So many people worked very hard to make the event run smoothly. Special thanks go to Mrs. Nellie Garcia and her family for lovingly baking more than one hundred cookies, and our judges Meghann Townsend and Becky Townsend, and fellow librarians Anne Momsen and Raquel Rodriguez. We also want to thank Erin Evans, Nancy Baca, Sarah Quintana, David Olivares, Judith Noriega, Ana Sandoval, Carolina Acevedo, our Assistant Principal, Maria Lopez, and our Principal, Marti Muela. We were also blessed to have the assistance of Jefferson High School's JROTC. Thank you so much for all your help and support!

Cooley's first and second graders had a ball at the library's Polar Express Lock-in! Thank you to all our helpers; we couldn't have pulled it off without you! Fall means cooler weather, changing leaves, and pumpkins! Here in the library, we love to celebrate fall and reading with our storytelling pumpkins. Any student or teacher can participate. Just choose your favorite storybook character and decorate a pumpkin to reflect that character! You can use glitter, paper, foam, cloth, paints, markers, really any materials you want to jazz up and decorate your pumpkin. You may use a real pumpkin (smaller than a basketball) or a plastic or paper pumpkin. You can check out our gallery from last year below, but I am so excited to see your new ideas for this year. Please DO NOT carve or cut into your pumpkin. We don't want to attract bugs! Stop by the library to pick up an entry form or download it below! All pumpkins will be on display for the rest of October, and all participants will receive a prize! Pick up your pumpkins to take home on Tuesday, October 31st. Happy decorating!
It's summertime! Summer is a time for rest, relaxation, and maybe some time at the beach or pool. While your librarian and teachers may be enjoying some of this, you can bet they are also spending a lot of time planning and preparing to make next year awesome! I myself have done a lot of reading this summer, getting ready for the new year. One of the blogs I read is Donalyn Miller's blog "The Book Whisperer." She has some very inspiring posts and presentations. Teachers, check it out! My favorite so far is "Creating an Engaging Reading Culture." I hope you are all getting your summer read on, and I can't wait to see you in a few weeks!
